Nolan says he felt that “to depart from Oppenheimer’s experience would betray the terms of the storytelling” and Oppenheimer is very clear about its focus on the protagonist, hence a final act that largely dwells on Strauss’s successful attempt to sully the scientist’s reputation by having his security clearance removed.Ten years ago, a little indie comedy shot in Idaho burst into the mainstream and made Napoleon Dynamite a household name. There’s nothing wrong with that, but if you look at photographs of actual survivors and read accounts of what happened to them it was a very horrifying, gory death,” said Carol Turner, a co-chair of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament’s London branch. “The effect of the blasts was to remove the skin in a much more gory and horrible way – in the film it was tastefully, artfully presented. This drew criticism from one nuclear campaigner, who told the Guardian that the result was an “unbalanced” film, with the impact of the Japan blasts instead portrayed by a quasi-nightmare sequence where Oppenheimer is beset by disturbing visions in a supposedly triumphal speech to Manhattan Project workers in Los Alamos. The film shows the first ever nuclear explosion in an impressively staged sequence but does not show what followed: the weapon’s use on civilian targets in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Oppenheimer is very clear about its focus on the protagonist … Robert Downey Jr as Lewis Strauss. Einstein was ambivalent about Oppenheimer’s theoretical work and, as played by Conti, he is an enigmatic figure in the film at least. Other performances feel faithful to the book as well: Matt Damon as the gruff Lt Gen Leslie Groves, the military overseer of the project and a key supporter of the enigmatic Oppenheimer Emily Blunt as the scientist’s alcoholic wife, Kitty Robert Downey Jr as Oppenheimer’s vindictive foe, Lewis Strauss, who pursued his target with a zeal that appeared to be based on perceived personal slights rather than any patriotic principle and Kenneth Branagh as Niels Bohr, the Danish quantum genius who makes a brief appearance as the film’s seer and moral conscience. If there is one detail Murphy captures in particular, it is Oppenheimer’s soft voice and, of course, their similarity in looks (Murphy, at 47, is broadly the same age as Oppenheimer was, at 41, when the bomb was first tested in 1945). His performance in Oppenheimer is even more impressive in the context of the nuanced, assiduous biography by Bird and Sherwin, which portrays an individual as complex as you would expect a high-achieving theoretical physicist to be. Murphy’s leading man credentials are not in doubt, with a résumé that includes Peaky Blinders and critical hits such as Sunshine. Impressive … Cillian Murphy as Oppenheimer. As with Oppenheimer, has the technology community left it too late to address the potential consequences of their achievements? Cillian Murphy: best man for the job? It is worth noting that signatories of a letter calling for a six-month pause in AI development this year included Elon Musk, an initial backer of ChatGPT developer OpenAI, Yoshua Bengio, a winner of the Turing prize (or “Nobel prize for computing”) and the co-founder of Apple, Steve Wozniak. Nolan told the Guardian that there are “very strong parallels” between Oppenheimer and the AI community. (I should note here that, in real life, Oppenheimer consulted a different physicist, Arthur Compton, about his apocalyptic concerns.) There are obvious parallels with the modern day and artificial intelligence, whose creators are now calling for development of the technology to be tamed. The excellent biography on which the film is based, American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin J Sherwin, goes into great detail about Oppenheimer’s regret over, and attempts to rein in, the monster he created. It is a devastating moment and is the emotive payload of the film, followed by a montage featuring rows of nuclear missiles, vapour trails of projectiles puncturing the sky, the planet being consumed by fire – and Oppenheimer’s stricken face. Einstein, played by Tom Conti, says: “What of it?” To which Oppenheimer replies: “I believe we did.” The film ends with a conversation between the godfather of the nuclear bomb and Albert Einstein in 1947, in which Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) reminds the German-born theoretical physicist that he had once approached him about fears that his project would “destroy the entire world”. After a heated argument between the brothers Nucky drops Eli from the Republican ticket in favor of Deputy Halloran. Eli is furious at Nucky for not outright denying his role in the murder. She strongly insinuates that he was responsible for the death of her husband, Hans, while he accuses her of not caring. Margaret comes upon them talking and then accuses Nucky of desiring to cheat on her. Desperate, she offers to resume her former relationship with Nucky. Margaret's neighbor Annabelle's patron loses all his money in the original Ponzi scheme. Nucky continues to deal with the twin pressures of winning the election and the gang war with the D'Alessio brothers. Angela returns home to find Jimmy has read the note and knows of her plans. There she finds the shop empty, as the Dittrichs' have absconded (in another scene we are shown that Robert Dietrich knows his wife is about to leave for France). Meanwhile, Angela carries out her plan to leave town with her son and Mary Dittrich, leaving a note for Jimmy and going to the photography shop. She does not admit responsibility.Īrnold Rothstein is called to Chicago to defend against charges that he rigged the 1919 World Series. Jimmy confronts Gillian with an empty canister of arsenic which he found in the trash while the Commodore recovers. The decision is a crucial one, for Jimmy holds the Commodore down while the doctor gathers samples for a hair test which later reveals significant amounts of arsenic (Paris Green) in the Commodore's blood. Gillian asks Jimmy to visit, and although their relationship is frosty, Jimmy decides to stay with his father as he passes away. The Commodore, now revealed to be Jimmy's father, is dying. Whether Van Alden planned the murder is left unclear. However, Van Alden holds Sebso under the water too long, drowning him. When Sebso, who is Jewish, puts in for a transfer to Michigan, Van Alden brings him to the river to be baptized. Looking for a still, the two encounter a black church's river baptism. Agent Van Alden continues to probe deeper into the killing of Billy Winslow, prompting Agent Sebso to make a call to Nucky asking for some leads to regain his boss's trust. Redemption center was closed 20 minutes before store. Located in a big parking lot on the lake, hard to miss and worth a stop in to stock up. Good selection of beer and wine and good prices. Worth making a special trip out to Sturbridge! One of the largest varieties of craft brews you can find. Employees generally leave you alone but are willing to help you if you ask. Largest selection of beer, wine and spirits with friendly knowledgeable staff to help you find what you came for and usually something else. Huge selection of craft beer, including hard-to-find MA breweries Night Shift and Trillium, plus an equally astounding selection of liquor and wine. They have an impressive microbrewery selection as well. Very large liquer store that carries a wide range of spirits. Can get hectic on holiday weekends but they do a great job of getting people out as quick as possible. I have seen IPAs over six months old.Īmazing selection. Huge selection of beer, wine, and liquor including some rare beers you wont find anywhere else nearby. Not a huge tasting compared to the wine tasting in November but still worth it If you are into craft beers there is a large selection at the back of the store. Stopped here on my way from Boston to NYC to pick some things up for the holidays. To top it off they even have tastings on the weekends! Super cool! The mother of all liquor stores!!! They literally have anything and everything you could possibly need to stack your liquor cabinet. We found everything we needed and i asked for a product and the associate went out of her way to help. Actually we ran into my brother and his wife who were going ti the same party as us. Typical prices for a Massachusetts store. I went there when there was a beer fest going on which made it very crowded but I would return. Huge selection of beer, wine, and liquor, well-organized and easily found. They have some great employees who can help you with wine selections as well. For the few things they dont they can get it in for you within a few days. For a decent price all around and friendly service, I definitely recommend a trip here if you are local or if you are planning a trip to Sturbridge, Massachusettsįor better prices than anyone they have most everything in alcohol. 1,200 beer varieties 1,500 wines and 3,500 varieties of spirits. Dont forget to pick up a bag of popcorn while youre there! Yum! Even when looking for a special wine or rare vintage liquor they are staff knows about it and direct you to where you can find it. Wow! If you are looking for it they got it! Ive never seen a larger liquor store with greater selection. Place is a little beat up but overall worthwhile, Ill stop in again if im ever passing through. I like in Maine and drove down, I thought they had a great selection of booze and wine as well as craft beer. I called about a discontinued liquor they had at another location and they shipped it quickly and everyone involved was very polite. Highly recommended to both the new wine lover and the experienced connoisseur. Joe has also even searched out wine for me that he doesnt normally carry (unusual, as the store is huge). Seminars are also offered from time to time, featuring notables in the wine trade and/or education on different wine producing regions of the world. They offer in-store wine tastings from 5 tables to 30+ tables many times during the year, to help increase your learning about and appreciation of wine. Joe and Adam and staff there are exceptionally friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. The entropy has decreased - as we predicted it would in the earlier page. Total entropy at the end = 214 + 2(69.9) = 353.8 J K -1mol -1Įntropy change = what you end up with - what you started with.Įntropy change = 353.8 - 596 = -242.2 J K -1mol -1 You ended up with 1 mole of carbon dioxide and two moles of liquid water. You started with 1 mole of methane and 2 moles of oxygen. In the introductory page we looked at the following reaction and worked out that there would be a decrease in entropy. Where Σ (sigma) simply means "the sum of". Change in entropy = what you end up with - what you started with You add up the entropies for everything you end up with, and take away the entropies of everything you started with. Working out entropy changes for a reaction is very easy. In an exam, you will be given values for all the standard entropies you need. The thing you must be most careful about is the fact that entropy is measured in joules, not kilojoules, unlike most of the other energy terms you will have come across. Use whatever units the examiners give you. 1 bar is 100 kPa 1 atmosphere is 101.325 kPa. Don't worry about it - they are nearly the same. You might find the pressure quoted as 1 atmosphere rather than 1 bar in less recent sources. If your syllabus doesn't mention all these different sorts, just ignore this comment.Įntropy is given the symbol S, and standard entropy (measured at 298 K and a pressure of 1 bar) is given the symbol S°. Entropy change to the surroundings and the total entropy change are dealt with on another page. This page deals only with entropy changes to the system. Note: If you haven't already read the page about introducing entropy, you should do so before you go on. Since entropy is a state variable, just depending upon the beginning and end states, these expressions can be used for any two points that can be put on one of the standard graphs. This page looks at how you can calculate entropy changes during reactions from given values of entropy for each of the substances taking part. Using the ideal gas lawīut since specific heats are related by C P = C V + R. This is a useful calculation form if the temperatures and volumes are known, but if you are working on a PV diagram it is preferable to have it expressed in those terms. Making use of the first law of thermodynamics and the nature of system work, this can be written With kT/2 of energy for each degree of freedom for each atom.įor processes with an ideal gas, the change in entropy can be calculated from the relationship This gives an expression for internal energy that is consistent with equipartition of energy. Then making use of the definition of temperature in terms of entropy: Expanding the entropy expression for V f and V i with log combination rules leads toįor determining other functions, it is useful to expand the entropy expression using the logarithm of products to separate the U and V dependence. One of the things which can be determined directly from this equation is the change in entropy during an isothermal expansion where N and U are constant (implying Q=W). The entropy S of a monoatomic ideal gas can be expressed in a famous equation called the Sackur-Tetrode equation. "People had been saying this for a very long time, but there was not one shred of proof. presidential elections, but I thought the last thing that America needed at that time was for Jack Daniel to come out again after all this commentary and raise up this story again." Then we were into that month or two leading up to the U.S. It was a very tense time in America, as well. "It ranged from some very positive commentary on the story to some very vitriolic. "There was an enormous amount of blowback," McCallum said. The company first acknowledged Green as Daniel's mentor last year. "When we've known and understood the weight of this story, all I can offer is anything we can do to continue to honor the name of Nearest, we will do," said Mark McCallum, president of Jack Daniel's brands. A1972 article in the Tennessee Historical Quarterly listed Nearest Green as Jack Daniel's first head distiller. Weaver soon found evidence in black and white. "And then after slavery he started his own company and the person he went to first was his mentor, and he did not see race as a barrier," Weaver said. Call teamed Daniel with Green, one of his slaves and his main whiskey man. In the late 1850s, Jack Daniel, an orphan, started working for a wealthy landowner and whiskey distiller named Dan Call. "I knew she had no reason to make up a story like that," Staples said. "Finally, one of the elders in the community says, 'Well, you know his name wasn't really Nearest.' Well, his name was Nathan and he's from Maryland," she said.Īfter digging for over 2,500 hours and speaking to more than 100 relatives, it started to come together.ĭebbie Staples - a great-granddaughter of Green's - had heard the tales of whiskey from her grandmother. Over the past year, Weaver has collected a library of documents, letters and pictures hoping to parse the truth from folklore. And it's never been spoken about until now?" Weaver said.įor Weaver, finding proof of Green's legacy has become a passion bordering on obsession. It was possible that an African-American was behind Jack Daniel's. "It was on the cover of The New York Times international edition. What Nearest Green, a slave, did was teach Jack Daniel how to make whiskey. "It's important to set the record straight because anyone who accomplished something like Nearest did should be honored," Weaver said. Then his name seemed to disappear, until author Fawn Weaver helped uncover the truth at the heart of how Daniel came to make whiskey, reports CBS News correspondent Michelle Miller. Some of the first clues about the role of Nearest Green were in Daniel's official biography, published in 1967, more than half a century after his death. But a story about how Jack Daniel began his distillery is only now gaining attention. The popular drink has been around for 151 years and its recipe is on the company's website. There's no mystery about what goes into Jack Daniel's whiskey. The lost story of Nearest Green, the slave who taught Jack Daniel how to make whiskey.
